Old Mutual Investors' (OMI) has always focused on blue-chip shares. This stood it in good stead over the recent past and OMI has produced a 73.5% total net return since the 1998 market low. But that did not quite match the Alsi. Investors must consider the low-cost index-tracking versus discretionary managed fund route. Note OMI's 18.8% per year growth record, one of the industry's best, to be compared with the Alsi's 19.8% per year rise over the 30 years to December 2000.
