Asset Allocation Data Single Fund Options
Asset Allocation Data

This page explains the tables presented under the Single Fund Options in FundsData Online. For a general discussion of asset allocation data and how it is used, please see the Fundpaedia.

The Asset Allocation Table gives a quick overview of changes in asset allocation within a fund over time. The column headers refer to quarter ends. 1Q, for example, means the end of the first quarter of the year shown. The left-hand column shows the asset allocation categories with bold lines as totals, like this:

Category1QExplanation
Equity Local65%65% of this portfolio is held in domestic (SA) shares
Equity Foreign15%15% of this portfolio is held in foreign (offshore) shares
Equity Total80%80% is held in equities (rather than bonds, cash or property)

The columns show the funds held in each category at the end of each of the last eight quarters, allowing you to monitor changes in asset allocation over time.

Quarterly Changes

In the illustration below, for example, the fund has steadily reduced its holdings in domestic (SA) shares, while steadily increasing its holdings in overseas shares. As a percentage of the full portfolio however, the amount invested in shares has declined steadily (at the rate of 5% per quarter).

Category 1Q this year 4Q last year 3Q last year 2Q last year
Equities Local 60% 50% 40% 30%
Equities Foreign 20% 25% 30% 34%
Equities Total 80% 75% 70% 65%

Asset Classes

For the sake of simplicity and ease of comparison, the assets of unit trusts are broken into four main categories: equities, bonds, property and cash. Where a fund holds both domestic (South African) and non-SA assets the categories are split into Local and Foreign as shown above.

The main types of securities or assets included in each class are summarised below:

  • Equities: Includes ordinary shares in listed companies and equity derivatives.

  • Bonds: Includes government bonds, corporate bonds, debentures, interest-bearing preference shares, and derivatives on interest-bearing securities.

  • Property: Includes shares and linked loan-stock units in listed property companies.

  • Cash: Includes cash on call, money market instruments and margin call deposits.
